The beginning of wine!

July 31st, 2009 by Nicolette Bailey

DSC01717grapes1The grapes are filling out very nicely. Very even in size and nice full clusters. The fruit is still a little heavy. We will make one more pass to thin crop after Veraison.

The vines are still growing so will need to hedge again.

The weather is back to normal with highs in the mid-80s and cool nights, down to 55. Great sleeping weather for our guests.

It has also cooled down for the wedding tomorrow at Youngberg Hill.

Another beautiful at Youngberg Hill

It has began to cool off. We are working in the vineyard today, dropping fruit, thinning down the amount of fruit hanging on the vines, so that what is left hanging will get more energy coming from the vines to ripen the fruit. The hot weather was a little tough on the young plants, but the old vines seem to take it well.

The guests enjoyed having the air conditioning to come home to the last few days. However, a couple of our guests enjoyed a cooler evening out on the veranda and picniced for dinner last night. We also had our friends, the Methvens over for dinner last night.

We were privelaged to be a Feature Winery at last weekends International Pinot Noir Celebration held in McMinnville, OR. Over 60 wineries from Australia, New Zealand, Austria, France, California, and Oregon participated. Youngberg Hill made many new freinds and lovers of our wines. As always, it was a fantastic event.

Now back to the dog (and cat) days of summer. Boy is it hot. Hopefully it will not last much longer.

The vines are loaded with fruit. The small clusters of Pinot noir grapes are healthy and growing. We will remove about half of them before harvest.grapes

NatashaIf you’re wondering who gets the beautiful vine leafs for your plates look no further. Natasha takes great care in picking out just the right one. Of course she does it from the Natasha Block of 20 year old vines.

Last night our guests enjoyed sitting outside on our benchs and swing scattered throughout the hill, enjoying the quite ambience and the beauty of the sunset, with the sun shining on the Cascades. A picture perfect

Busy on the Hill

July 13th, 2009 by Nicolette Bailey

A great weekend for wine tasting, visiting with guest from all over the world, and working in the vineyard. The 7 foot green wall of canopy is now well developed on the vines and fruit set is complete. The vines are healthy and the fruit is growing strong. We will thin the amount of fruit on the vines next week to reduce the yield.

As always there is tasting going on. Here are some of our distinguished tastersP6280073 evaluating the juice. We couldn’t get them out of the barrel room.
